Italy scientists have found oldest human blood

ROME, May 2 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Scientists examining the remains of "Otzi," Italy's prehistoric iceman who roamed the Alps some 5,300 years ago, said on Thursday they have isolated what are believed to be the oldest traces of human blood ever found.
The German and Italian scientists said they used an atomic force microscope to examine tissue sections from a wound caused by an arrow that killed the Copper Age man, who was found frozen in a glacier, and from a laceration on his right hand.
"They really looked similar to modern-day blood samples," said Professor Albert Zink, 46, the German head of the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman at the European Academy in Bolzano, the capital of Italy's German-speaking Alto-Adige region.
"So far, this is the clearest evidence of the oldest blood cells," he said by telephone, adding that the new technique might now be used to examine mummies from Egypt.

The studies were carried out in conjunction with the Center for Smart Interfaces at Darmstadt Technical University in Germany and the Center for Nano Sciences in Munich.

Over the last two decades, scientists have collected data from the stomach, bowels and teeth of the well-preserved man, who was found protruding out of a glacier by German climbers in 1991 in the Tyrolean Alps on the Austrian-Italian border.

Otzi, whose nickname derives from the German word for the area where he was found, had brown hair and type-O blood and was believed to be 45 when he was felled by an arrow while climbing the high mountains some 5,300 years ago.

The nanotechnology instrument used by Zink and his team scans the surface of the tissue sections using a very fine probe, the scientists said in a summary of their report.

As the probe moves over the surface, sensors measure every tiny deflection of the probe, line by line and point by point, building up a three-dimensional image.
RED DOUGHNUT CELLS
Zink, an anthropologist, said the red blood cells his team found had a classic doughnut shape seen in healthy people today.
"It is very interesting to see that the red blood cells can last for such a long time," he said.
"This will also open up possibilities for forensic science and may help lead to a more precise determination of the age of blood spots in crime investigations," he added.
Earlier this year, the scientists made the first complete genome-sequencing on Otzi, determining that the man had a predisposition for cardiovascular diseases and brown eyes that betrayed possible near-Eastern origins.
Otzi had lactose intolerance that was common among Neolithic agrarian societies and was also the first-known carrier of Lyme disease, a bacterial infection spread by ticks.
Examination of the wound where the arrow entered Otzi's back identified fibrin, a protein involved in the clotting of blood, a summary of the report said.
Because fibrin is present in fresh wounds and then decays, this appears to show that the hunter died quickly rather than after a few days as had been previously thought, it said.
Zink carried out his research with Marek Janko and Robert Stark, professors of material sciences at the Center for Nano Sciences in Munich and Italian colleagues in Bolzano.
To be certain that the specimens they were examining were blood and not pollen, the scientists used a second analytical method known as the Raman spectroscopy method.
In that method, a laser beam illuminates a tissue sample and analysis of the spectrum of the scattered light permits the identification of various molecules.
Zink said he and his colleagues hope to carry out further analysis on Otzi's enzymes, proteins and immune system.
"We hope we can make good progress in this area too," he said.
The complete results will be published by Britain's Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

Govt may go for rice export Minister cites lack of storage facilities as reason

Minister cites lack of storage facilities as reason

The government may go for rice export due to lack of sufficient storage facilities and to ensure fair price for the marginal farmers, said Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzaque yesterday.
“We see a bumper paddy production this year. The price of rice is falling at an alarming rate… I am very worried. We may go to export rice as we do not have adequate warehouses to procure more rice,” he told an inaugural session of a two-day workshop at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in the city.
The minister said the farmers were deprived of getting fair price of rice “as the government does not procure rice from them directly and the middlemen are getting the benefit”.
He said the government considers agriculture, food security and nutrition as the major priority areas. “Although we have made impressive achievement in food grain production since independence, we are still facing considerable challenges in the areas of population growth, climate change and persistence of large scale poverty and malnutrition.”
The National Food Policy Capacity Strengthening Programme (NFPCSP) of Fao organised the workshop on food and nutrition security policies with supports from the USAID and the EU.
Chaired by Food Division Secretary Barun Dev Mitra, the inaugural session of the workshop was also addressed by US Ambassador in Dhaka Dan W Mozena, Fao representative in Dhaka Dominique Burgeon, Charge d' Affaires and Head of Cooperation, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, Milko van Gool, NFPCSP Chief Technical Adviser Ciro Fiorillo and Director General of Food Planning and Monitoring Unit Naser Farid.
Speaking as the chief guest, the minister said he was very much hopeful that Bangladesh would achieve surplus in food production this year.
“We are very good in rice production… we are happy to see the country as sufficient in food or surplus in food,” he said.
Razzaque said achieving food and nutritional security is considered by the government as a prime development agenda to make the country a middle income one as envisaged in the Vision-2021.
About the government initiatives in achieving food security, the minister said, “Bangladesh has successfully prepared the Country Investment Plan (CIP) to implement the food security programmes.”
He said the CIP aims at securing funds from multilateral and bilateral partners and Bangladesh is the first recipient of a grand of $52 million in Asia from the Global Agriculture and Food Security Programmes.
Commitment for $325 million was also received from the USAID while $52.70 million from the Danida, the minister added.

Govt focus on expectant mothers at risk

Dhaka, May 3 (bdnews24.com) – The health minister has called upon all to help the government identify expectant mothers at risk.

"We have facilities, we have doctors, we have nurses ... we have everything we need, but we don't know who is at risk," Dr AFM Ruhal Haque said while opening the three-day Asian region meeting on maternal and newborn health in the capital.

The minister made the comment as Bangladesh has made a significant progress in reducing maternal deaths in the last decade, but to cut further, experts say, all pregnant mothers, particularly those at risk, should be brought under the health cover.

Dr Kanta Jamil, the USAID monitoring and evaluation adviser, gave an overview of Bangladesh's successes in maternal deaths reduction.

As around 30 percent mothers deliver at facilities, the health minister said it was 'not possible' for the government to offer services, if all mothers came to the facilities right now.

"It's not even necessary. What we need is to identify the mothers at risk," he said, adding the government had already started an initiative by collecting phone numbers of the pregnant women.

The conference that brought together at least 275 maternal and newborn health professionals from over 20 countries would discuss post-delivery bleeding and eclampsia, a hypertensive disorder during pregnancy, and other causes of maternal deaths in Bangladesh.

It will also discuss on tackling newborn deaths, another major contributor of under-5 mortality in the country.

The government has introduced tablet Misoprostol to prevent post-delivery bleeding while a pilot project is underway to see the effectiveness of Magnesium Sulphate at home-level to prevent eclampsia.

The minister hoped the conference would help Bangladesh learn ways of scaling up those 'good practices'.

Speaking at the function, health adviser Dr Syed Modasser Ali termed the meeting 'significant' for Bangladesh as it would discuss the challenges that the country faced.

He said although the country was on track to achieve MDG 5, challenge remained with regard to 'sustaining the rate given the complex socio-economic' factors that affected the goals.

"There are high rural-urban variations and regional disparities in all indicators," he said.

The 2010 Maternal Mortality Survey showed 194 women of 100,000 die every year, though it was 322 in 2001. Newborn deaths account for 60 percent of all under-5 mortality in Bangladesh.

"These terrible losses are even more tragic because most of them are preventable…these human losses are unnecessary," US ambassador to Bangladesh Dan W Mozena said, "All of us have gathered here this evening…we must stop them."

"America is your partner," the ambassador said citing America's assistance in the health sector.

USAID's Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP), with the support of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is organising the conference with the theme 'Make every mother and child count'.

In pre-conference meetings, global experts presented and discussed scientific evidences of the impact of calcium supplementation and anaemia correction in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.

They recommended Asian countries to integrate those in the national policy.

The first day of the meeting would discuss the global and regional progress to date in saving the lives of mothers, and preventing and treating post-delivery bleeding.

On the second and closing day, experts would dwell upon management of eclampsia and services for newborn.

How High Will Facebook Stock Go Tomorrow? Place Your Bet At FacebookIPODayClosingPrice.com

There are a few lessons you could take away from the fact that FacebookIPODayClosingPrice.comexists right now:

Ask and ye shall receive, especially if you’re Chris Sacca.
The Hacker Way goes way beyond Facebook headquarters.
Facebook IPO fever is definitely in full swing and we should all just give in to it.

Here’s the story: Angel investor and all-around web magnate Chris Sacca wrote a quick tweet early yesterday about how it’d be cool if there was a website where people could predict where Facebook’s stock will end up at the end of its first day as a publicly traded company. Horse races in general are always fun to watch, after all, and it’s definitely a conversation that’s happening around many a watercooler now that Facebook’s IPO is officially on for tomorrow morning.
So a programmer named James Proud answered the call, hacking togetherFacebookIPODayClosingPrice.com, a fun little website that keeps a running tally of people’s bets on where Facebook’s stock will close on IPO day.

    @sacca Ok!—
    James Proud (@jamesproud) May 16, 2012

The site, which went live yesterday afternoon, says it was “quickly knocked together with Python, Tornado, Postgres, Redis, Heroku, no sleep and Bootstrap.” It’s pretty simple: Anyone with a Twitter account can sign in and place his or her bet on what price Facebook’s stock will be at market close tomorrow afternoon.
Some big names in the web have weighed in on the site already: Chris Sacca thinks it will close at $56, while Chris Dixon predicts a slightly more modest $50.
And what’s the general consensus at the moment? As of press time (or clicking publish on WordPress time) the site says that 475 people have predicted an average closing share price of $54, which values the company at more than $135 billion. That’s a 42 percent boost over the $38 share price of its IPO — not too shabby. Anyway, if you’re so inclined go on over and place a bet of your own. At this point there’s no fighting the Facebook IPO fever — and if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with over 500 million users. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, initially as an exclusive network for Harvard students. It was a huge hit: in 2 weeks, half of the schools in the Boston area began demanding a Facebook network. Zuckerberg immediately recruited his friends Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes to help build Facebook, and within four months, Facebook added 30 more college networks. The original idea for the term...

Special Olympian with Down Syndrome shames Ann Coulter over calling Obama ‘retard’ Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/special-olympian-shames-coulter-calling-obama-retard-article-1.1191657#ixzz2AHmOsDge

The incendiary conservative pundit stood by her use of the slur Tuesday, but John Franklin Stephens challenged her to attend the Special Olympics and leave with an unchanged heart.

A Special Olympian with Down Syndrome castigated right-wing flamethrower Ann Coulter for calling President Obama a 'retard' after the final presidential debate.
A Special Olympics athlete with Down syndrome has shamed conservative pundit Ann Coulter in an open letter after she called President Obama a “retard” this week.

“Come on Ms. Coulter, you aren't dumb and you aren't shallow,” wrote John Franklin Stephens in a blog post. “So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?”

Stephens, 30, told Coulter that he has “struggled with the public's perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow.”

“I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you. In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night.”

Coulter used the offensive term when commenting about the final presidential debate on Twitter.

“I highly approve of Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the retard,” Coulter wrote Monday night.

WILL SCHERMERHORN/SPECIAL OLYMPICS, INC

John Franklin Stephens is a Special Olympics athlete.

Despite widespread outrage about the tweet, Coulter doubled down on her word choice on Tuesday.

“If he's ‘the smartest guy in the room’ it must be one retarded room,” she wrote about Obama.

In his open letter, Stephens wondered whether Coulter had used the word to suggest that President Obama was “bullied as a child by people like you” or that he “has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says.”

“After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me,” he wrote. “You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV.”

“Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor,” he said.

Stephens invited Coulter to attend the Special Olympics, challenging her to “walk away with your heart unchanged.”

Coulter has not yet publicly responded to the open letter, which Stephens signed “a friend you haven’t made yet.”

The conservative commentator has a long history of using inflammatory and offensive language.

Her latest insensitive remark comes just weeks after she was criticized for joking that national “coming out” day would be followed by national “disown your son” day.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Two years ago, critics decried the original iPad as just “a big iPod touch.” They saw the tablet as a glorified media player with a large screen.

Now, size is a factor again with the introduction Tuesday of the iPad mini, but this time being a “smaller iPad” turns out not to be a criticism.

I spent the better part of an hour using the iPad mini after Apple’s media event in San Jose. For many people who have eyed the iPad but who don’t want the weight or expense, the mini is a perfectly sized alternative.

The most important consideration is that the iPad mini is truly light and comfortable in the hand. It weighs 10.8 ounces (compared with the full-sized iPad’s 23 ounces) and measures 7.87 inches tall by 5.3 inches wide. The depth, at 0.28 inch, makes the whole thing seem even less weighty.

The original and subsequent iPads have been good for reading e-books and other texts, but not ideal — especially compared with Amazon’s Kindle readers.

The iPad mini comes much closer to the new Kindle Paperwhite, which weighs just 7.5 ounces, and is completely comfortable held in one hand for long periods (as much as I could project Tuesday, given I was in a room with hundreds of other journalists all vying to get their hands on the smattering of demo units).

Although I do read e-books on the third-generation iPad I own, I suspect I’ll use the iPad mini for my electronic reading.

The bezel at the left and right of the screen is narrower than the top and bottom, giving up more room for the 7.9-inch (diagonal) screen, but it’s not so narrow that my thumb would register accidental screen taps.

The screen resolution is the same as the iPad 2, at 1024 by 768 pixels, so you don’t get the Retina display found on other iPad models and on other Apple products (though I’m sure it will appear at some point).

But because those pixels occupy a smaller physical space — they’re physically smaller pixels — the resolution translates to a nice 163 pixels per inch (ppi). Text looks good, even if it’s not as pristine as that found on a Retina display.

From what I could tell, the screen also boasted good color fidelity and brightness.

If you’re concerned that the iPad mini’s non-Retina screen is a step back, don’t be: Just because Retina is the high-end display for Apple’s products doesn’t mean non-Retina screens are poor.

One aspect worthy of consideration, however, is that the iPad mini’s screen is glass, so, like other iPads, it’s reflective when viewed in bright light or direct sunlight. The less reflective Kindles retain this advantage.

Still an iPad
In every other respect, the iPad mini is still an iPad. Its touch-screen performance is smooth and responsive. It has Wi-Fi and optional cellular LTE networking, and it has the Lightning connector introduced with the iPhone 5.

It uses a dual-core A5 processor and includes a FaceTime HD front-facing camera and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, and boasts faster Wi-Fi than its predecessors. And it runs all of the apps that the other iOS devices run.

Prices start at $329 for a 16 GB model, adding $100 each for a 32 GB and 64 GB model. The cellular versions are each an additional $129.

Pre-orders start this Friday, with the Wi-Fi models shipping Nov. 2 and the cellular models shipping the following week.

Although the iPad mini was the star of the show, it wasn’t the only announcement.

The full-size iPad, now called iPad with Retina Display, enters its fourth generation with a faster A6X processor, Lightning connector and improved Wi-Fi.

The third-generation iPad introduced in March is now gone, but the iPad 2 remains available as Apple’s least expensive iPad at $399.

Apple also revamped the 13-inch MacBook Pro, which the company said is the most popular computer it sells.

The new model includes a Retina display, and is both thinner, at 0.75 inch when closed, and lighter at 3.57 pounds, than the previous version. It starts at $1,699 and is available now.

Lastly, the iMac enters its eighth generation with an exceptionally thin design — when viewed from the correct angle.

Its edges are just 5 mm in depth, though the back does bulge in a smooth hump, so it’s not the flat slab, like you might initially think. But it’s still nice, and when you’re using it, you’ll never see the hump.

This reduction comes at the cost of the optical drive. In fact, the only Macs that can now read CDs or DVDs are the non-Retina MacBook Pros (both 13- and 15-inch sizes) and the aging Mac Pro. Apple gave up on optical media years ago and is finally close to phasing them out throughout the product line.

I can already foresee one annoyance, though: The SD memory-card slot is on the back with the other ports, which means you’ll need to either stretch around to find it or blindly feel for the opening when you want to import photos from a camera’s card.

Apple dominates one of the only two market sectors that matter now

When Apple talks, people listen.

Apple Inc. is scheduled to release quarterly earnings on Thursday after the market close. But the ripple effects will be felt far beyond Wall Street.

That’s because Apple is a bellwether for consumer demand and the health of the U.S. economy. It’s the world’s largest company by market value, accounting for 4.5% of the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index and 1.7% of the global stock market, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.

Importantly, Apple is responsible for about one-fifth of the S&P 500’s 12.4% return so far this year (2.4%), according to Nicholas Colas, ConvergEx Group chief market strategist.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average , in contrast, doesn’t have Apple in its tree, but it does have a few juicy components for the data tables.

The 30 Dow stocks that, due more to history than economic reality, collectively define the U.S. market, are up 7.3% on average so far this year. But just five of them have meaningfully affected performance, according to Colas: Home Depot Inc. , Wal-Mart Stores Inc. , Walt Disney Co. , Travelers Cos. Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. together represent 60% of the Dow’s gain this year.

The Dow is price-weighted, meaning that the highest-priced stocks carry the most weight regardless of market capitalization, which is the S&P 500’s yardstick. So, for example, Bank of America Corp. is up 68% this year, but its low $9 price diminishes its influence on the Dow, Colas noted. But if BofA is added to the other five stocks, then the group accounts for two-thirds of the Dow’s performance.

In stark contrast, the Dow’s biggest components have been its weakest: IBM (11.2% weight), Chevron Corp. (6.5%), 3M Co. (5.3%), Exxon Mobil Corp. (5.3%) , McDonald’s Corp. (5.1%) , Caterpillar Inc. (4.9%) and United Technologies Corp. (4.5%) .

This is not an idle exercise. It shows that financial and consumer stocks have been the driving force behind the Dow’s robust 2012. Colas cross-checked the S&P 500 and found that, indeed, financials and consumer discretionary have been two of the benchmark’s strongest sectors.

“Pull it all together, and you get the following narrative: U.S. stocks are higher this year because of incremental confidence in the American consumer and domestic banking system,” Colas noted.

If consumer or banking stocks start to roll over, he added, it’s too late in the year for other sectors to support the Dow and the S&P 500. Read more: Apple iPhone 5 big seller, but supply questions remain.

Bottom line: “This market is all about the health of the consumer and the recovery in the financial system,” Colas said. “These stocks are the ‘Tells’ — nothing else really matters right now.”

Apple’s Next Challenge: Making Enough iPhones

A day after the buzzy unveiling of Apple’s new iPad Mini, investors are turning their attention to a big issue hanging over the company: how fast it can make iPhones. Supplies of the new handset, which went on sale Sept. 21, have been unusually tight, according to multiple analysts who track inventory. The wait for [...]

Apple iPad Mini price isn’t putting off MarketWatch readers Permalink Facebook Twitter Expand/Collapse An informal survey of MarketWatch readers suggests strong interest in the iPad Mini in spite of its price.

MarketWatch readers don’t appear to be put off by Apple’s pricing of its new iPad Mini.

More than 3,200 responses have been received to an informal survey of MarketWatch readers Wednesday about the iPad Mini’s price.
Apple introduced the new device Tuesday, with a starting price of $329. The move left some analysts worrying that Apple was risking slower sales, or leaving an opening for less expensive 7″ tablets offered by Amazon AMZN and Google, among others.

However, nearly 90 percent of those responding to the informal MarketWatch questionnaire indicated plans to get an iPad Mini.

And nearly 58% of that group indicated they’d buy one at the current price. An additional 37% said they’d wait for a price cut, while 5% said they get one used.

About 38% of responses indicated the iPad Mini’s $329 price was “Far too much.” Some 20% chose “What I expected.” And a plurality, 42% indicated the price is “Worth the premium.

Readers also appeared comfortable with the idea of being locked into Apple’s so-called ecosystem.

Could the iPad Mini Be a Gaming Game-Changer?

From Speakeasy:

Unsaid at Wednesday’s Apple press conference unveiling the new device is that it could well be a game-changer in iOS gaming – and maybe one day, the console-gaming — arena. Call it a stealth capability, but the iPad Mini is suddenly an extremely viable controller for iOS gaming. It also ups the ante as a pretty powerful seven-inch gaming platform, in and of itself. While I haven’t held one yet, looking at the specs, it should fit comfortably in one hand at 7.9 inches long by 5.3 inches wide. It’s not particularly heavy, at .68 lbs., and it has AirPlay streaming capability.

A quick word about iOS gaming: It’s huge. While the Xbox Live and PlayStation Network garner a lot of attention, ballpark figures show it’s no longer just about console gaming. Apple says its Game Center has over 160 million active accounts. It’s not a complete Apple-to-apples comparison, but the Game Center’s headline number is bigger than the combined subscribers for Microsoft ’s Xbox Live (over 40 million) and Sony ’s PlayStation Network (around 90 million).

Apple said it has had 35 billion app downloads since launching its app store. There are over 600,000 apps in its store, including over 250,000 for iPads. Just look around and you’ll see a lot of iOS gamers slashing away at their screens, playing Fruit Ninja or slinging Angry Birds or even playing high-octane, graphically beautiful racing or adventure games.

That said, the iPad’s chip and graphic specs, to date, haven’t been screamingly good enough to offer anything like the PS3 or Xbox 360 experience, and the iPad Mini, at its relatively low price of $329, won’t be next-generation on the chipset or graphics fronts. But compared to other tablets its size, the iPad Mini, with its dual-core A5 chip, packs a punch greater than nearly all rival Android tablets of similar dimensions.

Apart from time-wasters and some graphically interesting, but not particularly deep or intense iOS games, the iPad — and to some extent, the iPhone — have been interesting second screens for console games. So far this year, companion apps to new games are “in,” with several publishers including them in the Apple app store to build community and further bind players to their game’s virtual universe Electronic Arts , for example, lets you check virtual hockey and soccer scores and stats from your NHL 13 or FIFA Soccer 13 leagues. You can also trade players and sign free agents via the iOS app in NHL 13. This second-screen development, I’d characterize as “nice-to-have,” but not “must-have.”

A more-interesting development will come later this week, when Microsoft releases its SmartGlass application alongside the launch of its new Windows 8 operating system. The app, which Microsoft says will sync Windows 8 devices with the Xbox 360 via user accounts, moves mobile devices from second screen to first screen. At the very least, it creates interesting possibilities to use a Windows phone or Windows-powered tablet as a game controller or to enhance a console game experience.

With the impending launch of the WiiU, you can already see the elevation of the “dumb” plastic controller into the realm of “smart” controller, by adding a color touchscreen to the buttons and joysticks. Overall, you can foresee the day when it’s not clear where your phone or tablet ends and your gaming console or computer begins.

It’s not that Apple has lagged behind, but because of its proprietary hardware and software, it tends to exist in its own tightly controlled universe. Integration in that universe has already begun. It began several years ago, in fact. My home TV in Hong Kong displays my U.S DirecTV feed via Slingplayer on a Macbook using my apartment’s Wifi. On that same Wifi network is my iPhone 4S, which, via an app called “remoteMouse,” serves as my TV remote control. Friends of ours in Hong Kong and elsewhere stream photos, music or movies wirelessly to their TVs, using the AirPlay function in their iPhones, iPads or Mac computers via their AppleTV box or to devices, like special AirPlay speakers or receivers.

The iPad Mini quietly promises more convergence, especially on the gaming front. While SmartGlass is being tabbed as a Windows 8-Xbox 360 binder, it will also be available as an iOS app. Playing a car road-racing game like Forza Horizon, which just came out Tuesday, you can turn your iPhone or iPad into a GPS device that syncs with your console game account. It’s not a stretch to see more of that from console game developers, who will like the 7.9 inches of screen real estate the iPad Mini will provide.

I don’t know if the timing was coincidental, but 2K Games, while not specifically mentioning the new Apple device, announced just hours after the iPad Mini press conference from Apple, that it had begun development of a Borderlands game for iOS.

As well, for specific iOS games, I can see the day coming very soon when I will play a game on my TV, via Macbook, controlling the action with my iPad Mini – or even having what happens on the screen of my iPad Mini factoring directly into the game on the bigger screen.

I’m certainly not the first to point out the iPad Mini’s gaming potential, and it’s not a great secret, though exactly how it will develop into a controller or a first-screen “must-have” gaming device, will take some time and developer acumen. Since Apple’s announcement Wednesday, the Web has been abuzz with thoughts about what gaming niche the device will fill.

Chris Buffa, at Gametrailers, wrote that the iPad Mini’s $329 starting price point and small size means more iOS games in the hands of more gamers.

Dean Takahashi of Venturebeat spoke with developers, who see multiple opportunities for the iPad Mini to extend Apple’s reach in the gaming sector. One of his sources noted the iPad Mini essentially becomes the first 7-inch tablet that can render 3-D games comfortably.

And to my point about the iPad Mini’s role in the future of AirPlay, CultofMac’s Rob Lefebvre calls the new device, “the perfect gaming controller.”

Student, 17, Arrested in Jessica Ridgeway Murder

Oct. 24, 2012
A community college student has been arrested for the abduction, murder and dismemberment of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, Colorado police said today.

Austin Reed Sigg, 17, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of first degree murder, one count of second degree kidnapping and two counts of criminal attempts. Authorities expect he will be formally charged this week.

Sigg is a student at Arapahoe Community College, according to his arrest report.

"Law enforcement received the major break in the Jessica Ridgeway investigation they have been hoping for," the Westminster Police said today. "Late Tuesday evening police received a call that led them to a home near the Ketner Lake Open Space."

After Sigg was contacted in relation to Ridgeway's case, he was handcuffed and taken to the Westminster Police Department for interviewing and booking. He was "cooperative," according to the police report.

The teenager was later taken to Mountain View Detention Facility.

The charges against Sigg are for Ridgeway's death and for the attempted abduction of a jogger in May 2012.

"We notified the Ridgeway family this morning of this arrest and we hope and pray this arrest gives them some measure of closure in dealing with this horrible tragedy and loss they have suffered," Westminster Police Chief Lee Birk said at a news conference today.

Authorities said they could not release much information since Sigg is a juvenile and the affidavits in the case have been sealed under court order.

A woman who said she is Austin Sigg's aunt--reached by phone at Sigg's home number by ABC News--claimed the 17-year-old turned himself in to police.

Police would not comment on the claim at the news conference.

"It certainly was a collaborative effort non-stop, all day and night, but justice for Jessica is a process and this is the beginning of that," Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey said.

Sigg is expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday at 8 a.m. in Jefferson County Court.

Jessica Ridgeway vanished on Oct. 5 when she left for school. The fifth-grader never showed up at a nearby park where she was supposed to meet friends for the one-mile walk to her elementary school.

After an extensive search of the area, including knocking on doors and FBI road blocks, Jessica's dismembered body was found on Oct. 10 in an Arvada, Colo., park, miles from where she was abducted.

On Tuesday, authorities said there was a "definitive link" between Ridgeway's case and the attempted abduction of a jogger.

On May 28, at around 1:15 p.m., a 22-year-old woman was running on a trail around Ketner Lake when she said a man tried to grab her from behind, police said. The woman said he tried to put a rag over her mouth that had a chemical smell. She was able to get away and call 911.

Mission Status Report
Trajectory Maneuver Slated for Jan. 11
PASADENA, Calif. -- An engine firing on Jan. 11 will be the biggest maneuver that NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft will perform on its flight between Earth and Mars.
The action will use a choreographed sequence of firings of eight thruster engines during a period of about 175 minutes beginning at 3 p.m. PST (6 p.m. EST or 2300 Universal Time). It will redirect the spacecraft more precisely toward Mars to land at Gale Crater. The trajectory resulting from the mission's Nov. 26, 2011, launch intentionally misses Mars to prevent the upper stage of the launch vehicle from hitting the planet. That upper stage was not cleaned the way the spacecraft itself was to protect Mars from Earth's microbes.
The maneuver is designed to impart a velocity change of about 12.3 miles per hour (5.5 meters per second).
"We are well into cruise operations, with a well-behaved spacecraft safely on its way to Mars," said Mars Science Laboratory Cruise Mission Manager Arthur Amador, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "After this trajectory correction maneuver, we expect to be very close to where we ultimately need to be for our entry point at the top of the Martian atmosphere."
The mission's schedule before arrival at Mars on Aug. 5 in PDT (Aug. 6 in Universal Time and EDT) includes opportunities for five more flight path correction maneuvers, as needed, for fine tuning.
The Jan. 11 maneuver has been planned to use the spacecraft's inertial measurement unit to measure the spacecraft's orientation and acceleration during the maneuver. A calibration maneuver using the gyroscope-containing inertial measurement unit was completed successfully on Dec. 21. The inertial measurement unit is used as an alternative to the spacecraft's onboard celestial navigation system due to an earlier computer reset.
Diagnostic work continues in response to the reset triggered by use of star-identifying software on the spacecraft on Nov. 29. In tests at JPL, that behavior has been reproduced a few times out of thousands of test runs on a duplicate of the spacecraft's computer, but no resets were triggered during similar testing on another duplicate. The spacecraft itself has redundant main computers. While the spacecraft is operating on the "A side" computer, engineers are beginning test runs of the star-identifying software on the redundant "B side" computer to check whether it is susceptible to the same reset behavior.
The Mars Science Laboratory mission will use its car-size rover, Curiosity, to investigate whether the selected region on Mars inside Gale Crater has offered environmental conditions favorable for supporting microbial life and favorable for preserving clues about whether life existed.
On Jan. 15, the spacecraft operations team will begin a set of engineering checkouts. The testing will last about a week and include tests of several components of the system for landing the rover on Mars and for the rover's communication with Mars orbiters.
The spacecraft's cruise-stage solar array is producing 780 watts. The telecommunications rate is 2 kilobits per second for uplink and downlink. The spacecraft is spinning at 2.04 rotations per minute. The Radiation Assessment Detector, one of 10 science instruments on the rover, is collecting science data about the interplanetary radiation environment.
As of 9 a.m. PST (noon EST, or 1700 Universal Time) on Saturday, Jan. 7, the spacecraft will have traveled 72.9 million miles (117.3 million kilometers) of its 352-million-mile (567-million-kilometer) flight to Mars. It will be moving at about 9,500 mph (15,200 kilometers per hour) relative to Earth and at about 69,500 mph (111,800 kilometers per hour) relative to the sun.
JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Science Laboratory mission for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says a lot of personal memories went through his mind as he sat besides the body of late Yash Chopra at the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai. The filmmaker deserved to stay longer with the Bollywood fraternity, he says.
"An association of 44 years abruptly comes to an end. He went away too soon and too suddenly. He deserved to be with us longer. Yash Chopra, a friend first, a creative legend later, has passed away this (Sunday) evening in the late hours," Amitabh wrote on his blog srbachchan.com.
"As I sit beside his still and flower-decked body in his studio within the portals of the large common patio, there does not pass a moment when all that we shared flashes by. This colossal studio that he built after years of hard work and labour, shall for the next day, house his last physical remain.
"I doubt if he had ever dreamt that this unique and most distinguished facility would find space to accommodate him in the state that we see him today," he added.
Amitabh, who worked with Chopra in films like Kabhi KabhieSilsila andTrishul, recalled that he last met the filmmaker on his own 70th birthday celebrations.
"I last saw him on my birthday celebrations. He was indisposed and the doctors advised him rest, but he was insistent on coming over. He had made a commitment he said," wrote Amitabh.
"He had been asked to speak, one among four others that did that evening, over the sit-down dinner. His words still ring in my ear and what remains are the resonance of his goodness and feeling that he exuded towards me," he added.
However, Amitabh has one regret.
"For some months lately, he had been calling and telling me to drop by in the early hours of the morning as I returned from the gym for ‘just a chat - no work, no issues, just a chat’. I had promised him that I would, and I never was able to," wrote Big B.
Chopra passed away on Sunday evening at the Lilavati Hospital following multiple organ failure. He was 80, and was admitted to hospital after he was diagnosed as having dengue

Yash Chopra deserved to live longer: Amitabh Bachchan

Steelers Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers appear ready to roll

The Pittsburgh Steelers have gotten really good at making people who count them out look really bad in recent seasons.

If Sunday night is any indication, they're getting ready to do it again.

Behind a smothering defense and revitalized running game, the Steelers overpowered the Cincinnati Bengals in a 24-17 win at Paul Brown Stadium.

From NFLShop.com:
Ben Roethlisberger gear.

The Steelers (3-3) entered Week 7 ranked 31st in the NFL in rushing, but they gashed the Bengals for 167 yards on the ground. They managed that despite missing both Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman, not to mention Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey.

Jonathan Dwyer -- third on the depth chart at running back -- led the way with 122 yards on just 17 carries. The Steelers dominated in time of possession, holding the ball for more than 37 minutes.

When the Bengals got their chance on offense, they struggled to decipher Dick LeBeau's scheme. Andy Dalton was ineffective, barely eclipsing 100 yards passing. A.J. Green was covered well by Ike Taylor, who also got help over the top to neutralize one of the game's best receivers. The Bengals were outgained 431-185 in total yardage.

After a fast start, the Bengals went right back to looking like the little brother in the AFC North. The Steelers, meanwhile, looked like a team reacquainting themselves with an identity that's served them well in the past.Don't discount how hard it is to beat Jeff Fisher's Rams in St. Louis, even if Aaron Rodgers made it look easy.

The Rams were 3-0 at home against solid competition: Washington, Seattle, and Arizona. St. Louis is a team that battles to the end every week with a strong pass rush and a physical secondary. They were a top-five scoring defense heading into Sunday for a reason.

That's what makes Rodgers' 30-for-37, 342-yard, three-score effort on Sunday just as impressive as his six-touchdown explosion in Houston in Week 6. Despite no Greg Jennings or running game, Rodgers hit the Rams with an array of quick passes and vertical strikes. It's like the first five weeks of the season never happened.

With Jacksonville and Arizona coming to Lambeau the next two weeks, Green Bay is ready to put together a run.

Trouble in victory
1. Sunday's escape against the Jets was another strange moment in an increasingly strange Patriots season. Tom Brady and the boys finally earned some coffee, but only after they coughed up a 10-point fourth quarter lead. Again.

The Patriots have been somewhat unlucky to be 3-3 before Sunday, but they got the breaks in this one. It was their first "clutch" win -- a necessary one -- yet it felt like New England's worst performance of the season. The secondary can't make plays on the ball and is starting to look like it looked a year ago. The Jets offense was more explosive.

It was a win, but in many ways the most troubling game of their season.

2. The Cowboys squeaked out a win against a lackluster opponent and were lucky to escape with a victory. They aren't an inconsistent team. They consistently look like an 8-8 squad. And they have a chance to prove me wrong next week against the Giants.

3. You can look at Minnesota's offense on Sunday a few ways. Adrian Peterson gets better every week and put the team on his back. Or you could notice that the Vikings somehow won despite getting 43 yards passing. Christian Ponder had seven yards in the second half.

Familiar and depressing
Carolina's Cam Newton wore a crazy sweater, and unburdened his soul after the game. He's right: The team's offense needs to make changes.

One of those changes could be giving running back DeAngelo Williams more carries. He had two on Sunday, and then retweeted a bunch of messages from his fans complaining about Williams' lack of use.

Newton's rough press conference. Williams' Twitter adventures. Another backbreaking fourth quarter for the Panthers. It's all so familiar.

Carolina is a great example of the league's parity. They have lost four games at the very end. "The past couple of games have been the same script, by the same director," Newton said. "It's kind of getting boring."

So you're saying there's a chance?
1. Is the Saints season still over? The offense is humming once again. They could get within one game of .500 with a win in Denver next week. That might be the most intriguing game between a 2-4 team and a 3-3 team in NFL history.

2. Almost no team is dead in a lousy AFC. That includes the Titans, who are 3-4 despite getting outscored by 89 points this year. Eighty-nine! Buffalo lost to Tennessee and has been outscored by 56 points. These are your AFC contenders!

3. The Colts are also hanging around at 3-3 despite being outscored by 41 points. RG3 will deservedly get the headlines, but Andrew Luck is propping up a bad team with a lot of holes. We give them a lot of credit for being a tough out at home.

Mixed emotions
It had to be a strange day to be a Redskins fan. They lost their leading receiver (tight end Fred Davis) for the season, but fan favorite Chris Cooley is supposed to return. They lost a heartbreaking finish to the Giants, but Robert Griffin III still added to his growing legend.

Sure, Griffin turned the ball over twice. But he was nearly flawless before that and put together a touchdown drive for the ages to put the Redskins ahead with under 90 seconds left. RG3 eluded Jason Pierre-Paul in the open field to convert on fourth-and-10. He used his legs to set up a gorgeous 30-yard touchdown toss to Santana Moss.

Eli topped Griffin in the end, but Griffin is going to be a pain for the Giants to handle for a long time.

Green Bay Packers: Biggest Winners & Losers in Week 7 Win over Rams

The Green Bay Packers finished up their three consecutive road trip games by defeating the St. Louis Rams 30-20 on Sunday afternoon at the Edward Jones Dome.

The Packers won two out of those three games, which is a pretty good outcome, all things considered.

By virtue of their win over the Rams, the Packers got over .500 and improved their record to 4-3 on the season

Zombies!!! board game adaptation still in development, coming soon

It turns out a full console version of Zombies!!! is still shambling around, according to a new trailer and dev diary released this week. Developer Barbaroga has been working on a bigger and better video game version of the Twilight Creations board game for over two years now, though the project's been dark since late 2010.

A version did get released on Windows Phone last year, but it's finally arriving soon, according to these videos, on Xbox Live, Windows, iOS and Android.

The graphics have been updated, the gameplay and controls have been tweaked, and Babaroga has added asynchronous multiplayer features, so players will be able to trade turns back and forth. Babaroga says the full console version of Zombies!!! should be out as soon as "winter" this year.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Street Fighter X Tekken are now Games on Demand

Xbox 360 users will find two new games available under the Games on Demand section of Xbox Live. Capcom has announced Slant Six's shooter Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is available for download on Xbox Live alongside cross-over fighter Street Fighter X Tekken. Each will set you back $39.99 in the United States.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City wasn't in the best shape when we reviewed it, but a patch issued back in June may have alleviated some of our issues. And as far as Street Fighter X Tekken goes, that thing's been patched up, down and sideways, and Capcom is promising a "hefty update" later on this year. There's also a new mobile version of Street Fighter X Tekken on iOS now, if you're more for fighting on the bus, train or – well, everywhere we guess since you won't stop staring at your iPhone.
